Reckoning with the Unconscious #6

Reckoning with the Unconscious #6

Watercolor on 9" x 12" coldpress paper
Original (one-of-a-kind)

Many of us carry entire landscapes within us. Memories, instincts, fears, competing thoughts all moving at once. The noise is not the problem. The problem is forgetting that we can step back from it, that awareness itself is a kind of ground to stand on. The monkey has long been a symbol of the restless mind across many traditions, and here in the Yucatán they are still a living presence, quick and mischievous, always reaching for the next branch.

This painting lives in the moment when that movement softens and something steadier rises. Not through force or control, but through attention. The throat, the place of voice and expression, holds a particular intelligence. It knows the difference between reaction and response. Between noise and truth. We are not our thoughts. We are the ones noticing them. And in that noticing, something opens. Clarity arrives not as an absence of noise but as a return to ourselves. Presence, it turns out, is its own kind of strength.
