Reckoning with the Unconscious #13

Reckoning with the Unconscious #13

Watercolor on 9" x 12" coldpress paper
Original (one-of-a-kind)

Continuity does not require closeness or certainty. It asks only to be tended. For the ancient Maya, corn was not simply sustenance. It was sacred origin, the very substance from which human life was made. Seed saved from seed, knowledge passed hand to hand, a migration completed across generations where no single traveler finishes the journey yet the path is never lost. What is rooted deeply enough does not need our certainty to persist. It continues quietly, oriented toward return, even when the timing is unknown.

The monarch butterfly has long moved through this land, following a path remembered across generations, returning to places no single butterfly has ever been. This painting draws from that same intelligence. It is not about restoring what was or predicting what will be. It is about honoring what endures beneath change, what moves forward even through absence, even through grief, even through seasons when connection feels interrupted. Love, like seed, like migration, does not disappear because distance exists. It waits. It continues. It finds its way.
