Community is not a place. It is not defined by geography or belonging to the same country or culture. It is something we practice. In the quiet rhythms of everyday life, in the ordinary moments we choose to show up for one another.
Along the coast of Panama, fishermen gather before sunrise. Before the boats ever touch the water, people are already helping. Nets are gathered. Boats are pushed together. Conversations are shared. It is not remarkable to them. It is simply how life is lived. Watching them, something becomes clear. We have never truly been separate from one another or from the land and sea that sustain us. Perhaps we have simply forgotten.
This painting holds that question. How do we practice community in our own lives, not only in moments of celebration, but in the ordinary rhythms that hold us together?
